
Some people wondered if the Mars boys' soccer team had enough firepower left after winning the WPIAL Class AA championship last season.
If last night were any indication, the answer is 'yes.'
Ryan McKenzie scored two goals to pace the second-ranked Planets to a 5-3 win at No. 6 Hampton (1-1, 0-1) in Section 2.
The Planets (2-0, 1-0) led, 3-2, at halftime, and controlled play in the second half to pull out the win.
"We've never won at Hampton before," said Mars coach Chris Knauff.
"The boys are pumped. They know it's a huge win. We prepared well.
"You don't normally see this many goals in these games.
n Bret Boyle scored off a corner kick with 5:38 remaining in overtime to give host No. 8 Pine-Richland (1-0, 1-0) a 1-0 victory against Shaler (1-1-1, 0-1) in Section 2.
n Fox Chapel goalkeeper Mike Lucas picked up his second consecutive shutout to help the No. 7 Foxes (3-0, 1-0) open Section 3 play with a 4-0 win at Plum (0-3, 0-1).
n In Section 4, Bethel Park (1-0, 1-0) survived visiting West Mifflin's (1-2, 0-1) upset bid, as the third-ranked Black Hawks got a goal from Mark Riley with 7:31 left to beat the Titans, 1-0.
n Also in Section 4, Arkangelo James' goal with four minutes left in overtime helped host Baldwin (1-2, 1-0) edge Laurel Highlands (2-2, 0-1), 3-2.
n Chad Trozzi's two goals sparked host Burrell (2-1, 1-0) to a 2-0 upset victory against eighth-ranked Indiana (1-2, 0-1) in Section 1.
n No. 7 Chartiers Valley (2-1, 1-0) used a first-half goal from Kevin Helbig to beat visiting McGuffey (1-2, 0-1), 1-0, in Section 5.
n Max Kovalchuk netted two goals and added an assist to help Geibel (3-0, 1-0) continue its surprising start with a 4-2 victory against visiting South Allegheny (0-1, 0-1) in Section 1.
n Another upstart Section 1 team, California (3-0, 1-0), stayed perfect with a 1-0 victory against host Brownsville (0-3, 0-1). Skyler Boehm's goal 20 minutes into the second half was the difference.
n Defending WPIAL champion Seton-LaSalle (2-0, 1-0) needed overtime to bear host Avonworth (0-1, 0-1), 2-1, in Section 3. Tyler Trainor's goal lifted the No. 4 Rebels to the win.
n Tabitha Sprankle's goal with 10 minutes left lifted Blackhawk (2-0) to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory against visiting Freedom (0-1) in a non-section match.
n Ashlee Moeller's second goal of the game with eight minutes left gave host Riverside (1-1) a 3-2, non-section victory against Ellwood City (0-1).
n Freshmen Tom Nettles and Trent McPherson fired 1-under 34s at Mt. Lebanon Municipal Golf Course to push Peters Township past Mt. Lebanon, 187-201, in Division 1, Section 7.
n Junior Kevin Loutsenhizer shot a 3-under 32 in Penn-Trafford's 179-191 victory against Latrobe at Westmoreland Country Club in Division 1, Section 1.
n Chris Falibota and Bryce Plant shot even-par 36s in Elizabeth Forward's 186-206 Division 1, Section 6 win against Baldwin in Division 1, Section 6.
n Shaler hired Brian Junker as baseball coach. The former Shaler player replaces Bob Hindes, who resigned.
