Penn State's rebuilt offense debuts vs. Akron
Saturday, September 05, 2009

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State's rebuilt offense will make its long-awaited debut today.

Six new starters will be in the lineup when the No. 9 Nittany Lions play Akron in their non-conference opener at Beaver Stadium.

The new trio of wide receivers includes Derek Moye from Rochester High School, Graham Zug and Brett Brackett.

There also are three newcomers up front-- left guard Matt Stankiewitch, right guard Lou Eliades and right tackle DeOn'tae Pannell.

The two other returning starters on the line -- center Stefen Wisniewski (Central Catholic) and left tackle Dennis Landolt -- are playing new positions.

"I'm anxious to see some of these kids, see what they can do," coach Joe Paterno said.

Today

Game: No. 9 Penn State (0-0) vs. Akron (0-0), noon today, Beaver Stadium. Nittany Lions favored by 27 1/2 points.

TV, radio: Big Ten Network; WEAE-AM (1250) and Penn State Sports Network. Game also can be heard at www.GoPSUsports.com.

Penn State: Is 36-7 in openers under coach Joe Paterno. ... Is 39-1 against Mid-American Conference teams under Paterno. ... Former RB Curt Warner will be honored at halftime for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame later this year.

Akron: Is 0-3 against the Lions. ... QB Chris Jacquemain threw for 2,748 yards, 20 TDs and 14 interceptions last season. ... Three starters from WPIAL -- WR Jeremy Bruce (Blackhawk), LB Aaron Williams (Penn Hills) and C Elliott Bates (Chartiers-Houston).

Hidden Stat: The only MAC school to defeat a Paterno-coached team was Toledo in 2000.

Paterno already knows what senior quarterback Daryll Clark can do. The first-team All-Big Ten Conference pick will be counted on to provide some spark, along with tailback Evan Royster, a 1,000-yard rusher.

Senior tight ends Mickey Shuler and Andrew Quarless, who are listed as co-starters, also could shoulder some of the offensive load.

Clark passed for 2,592 yards and accounted for 29 touchdowns (19 passing, 10 running) in his first season as the starter in the team's Spread HD offense last season.

"Right now, Clark has got to run the show, and we've got to make sure we give him enough that he can do the job that he's capable of doing," Paterno said.

Although it will be difficult for the inexperienced Lions to match their offensive numbers of a year ago -- 38.9 points per game and 448.9 yards -- Clark is not concerned. He expects a number of the newcomers to make plays against the Zips.

"I think the only thing that's different is the new faces," Clark said. "Nothing has really changed as far as the offense and the playbook. We're going in with the same intent as we had last year -- Spread HD if you will -- and we're going to run these plays accordingly."

Akron quarterback Chris Jacquemain, a three-year starter, will test the Lions' secondary, which features four new starters. Knowledge Timmons and D'Anton Lynn will be the cornerbacks, with Nick Sukay (Greensburg Central Catholic) at strong safety and Drew Astorino at free safety.

"[Jacquemain is] a very smart kid," Paterno said. "He's very careful with the football. They have experienced wideouts and an outstanding offensive line. We'll have our hands full."

NOTE -- Penn State redshirt freshman middle linebacker Michael Zordich has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following an incident at 3:25 a.m. Sunday. Zordich, 19, was stopped after university police noticed he was driving without his headlights on. Penn State Police Deputy Director Tyrone Parham said Zordich failed a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol content was 0.19. The limit for a minor is 0.02. His preliminary hearing has been scheduled Oct. 7. Zordich, whose father, Mike, was an All-American strong safety at Penn State who went onto play in the NFL, was listed No. 3 on the depth chart released Monday. Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson had no update on Zordich's status for today's game.
