Braddock library books special night
Film notes
Friday, September 04, 2009

In mid-September, you can see 1968 Braddock through the eyes of an English teacher ahead of his time and a group of his students who produced a 34-minute film there.

"Jazz From a Very Special Hotel" will play Sept. 12 at Braddock Carnegie Library, 419 Library St., along with two short films by filmmaker Tony Buba.

As Buba tells it in a flier advertising the event: "Long before film and video production were taught in high school, St. Thomas High School in Braddock had an English teacher with a vision. Laurence Taylor and his students produced a 34-minute film," in response to one called "Steeltown Blues."

Another Braddock native, Joe Pytka, had made it for WQED-TV and the students thought it negative and decided to respond, on film. Pytka went on to become the king of commercials, turning out pitches for Pepsi, Nike, McDonald's and a long list of clients.

Buba calls "Jazz" a classic boy-meets-girl romance with the town of Braddock playing a major character. After the screening, there will be a question-and-answer session with some of the makers of the film.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 and the screenings start at 7 p.m. at Braddock Carnegie Library, which also will be open for tours. Suggested donation, $5, with proceeds benefiting the library. If you join Braddock's Field Historical Society, you will receive a free DVD of "Jazz From a Very Special Hotel."

Extras casting alert

Nancy Mosser Casting will be handling extras casting for the Paul Haggis film "The Next Three Days" starring Russell Crowe.

It's an adaptation of a French film about a wife and mother convicted of a murder she insists she did not commit and her husband's desperate efforts to free her. Elizabeth Banks has been in talks to play the wife but no casting has been confirmed.

Mosser Casting will need roughly 1,800 people. If interested, sign up at www.mossercasting.com but if you are already registered with the agency, no need to reapply.

If you don't have Internet access, send a recent photo with name and contact information (especially phone number) and height, weight, hair and eye color to: Nancy Mosser Casting, 3583 Butler St., Pittsburgh PA 15201.

The movie, set in Pittsburgh, will shoot here this fall.

Calling all cars

Pottersville Pictures is looking for Pittsburghers who want to make stars out of their cars. The company will be filming the romantic comedy "Love & Other Drugs" in the Pittsburgh area from Sept. 21 to Dec. 1 and is searching for vehicles with model years from 1985 to 1997.

"Love & Other Drugs" stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. He's a Pfizer pharmaceutical salesman and she is a Parkinson's patient who becomes his romantic interest.

If you have a vehicle from the specified years, contact Marc Scott at Pottersville Pictures at 412-572-5232. Leave your name, phone number and the year make of your vehicle, and the film's transportation department will contact you if interested.
