Somebody asked The Fumbler the other day if he prefers Twitter or Facebook.
The Fumbler just laughed. He prefers PG+ over everything else. Try it. You will, too.
OK, enough with playing the pitchman.
Well, now that The Fumbler brought up the word "pitchman," he admits he was saddened over the summer by the death of Billy Mays. Many people don't know that the pitchman (Mays) and the pickman (The Fumbler) had a long history as buddies and used to hang out on occasion in McKees Rocks.
The Fumbler definitely shed a tear for Mays, but now that the beginning of another high school football season is here, The Fumbler has some bounce back in his step and is excited about the next few months.
He predicts a few things. He won't eat any boiled hot dogs, he will have a tough time finding a parking space when he visits the Wolvarena and no one from the Keystone Conference will win a playoff game ... there's a surprise.
What isn't a surprise is how good The Fumbler is at predicting games. A year ago, he was 561-138, good for an .803 percentage. Anything over .800 for a season is pretty darn good. But the first week of the season is always the toughest. Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top matchups:
Gateway at Penn Hills, 7:30 p.m. today -- Gateway did not make the Post-Gazette's preseason Class AAAA top five while Penn Hills was No. 4. The Fumbler is not into bashing his employer, but he would like to know who does those rankings, because they're wrong. Gateway is a top-five team and will prove it. Quarterback Rob Kalkstein will be the difference. Winner: Gateway.
Perry vs. Brashear, 7:30 p.m. today, Cupples Stadium -- Don't you wish this game was later in the season. It's better to build up to a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown. Perry is ranked No. 1 in the City League and Brashear No. 2. That will change after tonight. Winner: Brashear.
Canon-McMillan at Trinity, 7 p.m. today -- Could this be the year Trinity wins more than one playoff game? Could this be the year Canon-McMillan makes an impact in the Great Southern Conference? This game might help answer some of those questions. Winner: Canon-McMillan.
Monessen at Rochester, 7:30 p.m. today -- Both teams are ranked in the top five in Class A. The Fumbler still wonders how good Monessen is? Winner: Rochester.
McKeesport vs. St. Joseph's Prep, 12:30 p.m. tomorrow, Wheeling, W.Va. -- St. Joseph's Prep is a perennial power from the Philadelphia Catholic League. McKeesport still is trying to get its line play together. Winner: St. Joseph's Prep.
Woodland Hills vs. Steubenville, Ohio, 3:30 p.m. tomorrow, Wheeling, W.Va. -- Steubenville has won 61 regular-season games in a row. That's enough. Winner: Woodland Hills.
Central Catholic vs. Youngstown Ursuline, 6 p.m. tomorrow, Wheeling, W.Va. -- Central Catholic's defense will be the difference in this contest. Central Catholic must control Ursuline's skill-position players. Winner: Central Catholic.
