Colin Dunlap's WVU football chat transcript
Thursday, September 03, 2009

Colin Dunlap: Alright, Colin Dunlap here. Welcome to the first of what I hope is many WVU chat sessions ... fire away.

CoachStew: Is Stewart the right man for the job?

Colin Dunlap: Absolutely I think he is. If you look at it, he led the team to wins against Oklahoma and North Carolina in bowl games the past two seasons. I think a lot of programs would be happy with such a showing.

Best_in_the_Biz: Colin, listened to your Jarrett Brown audio; don't you think the whole thing about what it will be like for him to walk out of the tunnel is a little overblown? I mean, he's a fifth-year senior right? And he's played in a lot of games already, right?

Colin Dunlap: I don't think it is overblown and I'll tell you why. This time, it is HIS team. You will see a story by me in tomorrow's paper about this. It was a little different knowing he was the backup. In a sense, the pressure wasn't as high and, had he failed in those past endeavors, he had a built-in excuse. Now, no excuses -- he's THE MAN, the starter. That said, it will be totally different this time.

Lincoln_Osiris: I think the annual whining by Pitt fans regarding playing Penn State is exhausting. They need to get over it. That said, do you think Penn State & WVU might ever do a 1-1 some time in the future?

Colin Dunlap: I'd love to see it. How about this idea -- just have them play once, one of those early-season neutral site games and do it at Heinz Field and split the revenue.

Motown_man: Will this be Noel Devine's last year with WVU?

Colin Dunlap: I am leaning toward yes. If I were a betting man (and I only play roulette) I would get a ticket to see WVU this year if I wanted to see Devine play in college.

samalifagus: Colin, given that Jeff Mullen is trying to go to more passing, and with a somewhat inexperienced line, is WVU going completely away from some of the plays that have been successful for years, like the belly option?

Colin Dunlap: Nope, never fully going to go away from that stuff. But I do see them, as you mentioned, being more pass-heavy. But don't look for them to do this five-wide, throw-it-all-over-the-yard kind of stuff. In the next few weeks in particular, I would look for the offense to go with some TE dump-offs, swing passes and screens. That will help the O-Line come along.

bubs: Will WVU ever see talent the likes of Pat White or Steve Slaton again?

Colin Dunlap: Yes. Geno Smith and Tavon Austin in a sense -- maybe.

Best_in_the_Biz: Colin, loved your video work on the Pedro Alvarez stuff and the Stanton Heights follow-ups. Any chance we'll see you bust out the camera on this WVU beat?

Colin Dunlap: Yes, there is a chance. Know this, though -- like most college football programs, access isn't wide open. There really are only a few chances during the week to get players and coaches and, even with all this new media, we have stories to write. But, yes, I will get some video together for you.

WVUJAGGER: If WVU's offense can score consistently this season in the mid 20's, I think WVU has a great chance to win the BE. Agree or Disagree?

Colin Dunlap: Yes and no. In the 20s will get it done the first two weeks, against Marshall, Syracuse and probably UConn. The other games, especially against Pitt, at Cincy and at USF, I don't know.

samalifagus: Colin, who do you think will be the most productive WVU receiver this year?

Colin Dunlap: I think Alric Arnett will be, with Wesley Lyons being a close second. Arnett is an intriguing cat -- he had 35 catches or so last year and a few touchdowns and is a former JUCO guy. From what I saw in the scrimmages, I really like him. And then there is Lyons. Guy looks like an NFL guy, there is no question about it. When he decides he wants to go get the football, he is tough to stop -- it is a matter of him deciding that the ball is his. A lot of the passing game hinges on Lyons' continued progression.

CoachStew: What happens if Noel Devine gets hurt?

Colin Dunlap: WVU cancels the season. Just kidding. It would be a pretty huge blow, as the depth chart has two freshmen -- Mark Rodgers and Shawne Alston -- behind him. If Noel were to go down, I would look for a combination of those two, maybe Jock Sanders and perhaps even Tavon Austin to get carries. But if there were one player that would be tough to replace, I would say it would be Devine --- the guy is one of college football's best, no question.

bubs: WVU seemed to have a pipeline to City League talent in years past with Rasheed and other solid players like Vaughan Rivers. Has that dried up now that Rich Rod is gone?

Colin Dunlap: Not entirely ... The Mountaineers got Will Clarke from Allderdice in the last recruiting class. He is a freshman DE who could be headed for a redshirt or who might play this year, it is really too early to tell. In terms of a pipeline drying up, I think it could also be a case of individual talent drying up a bit in the City League. If you really look at it, they haven't produced many Division I guys in the past few years.

samalifagus: Assuming that WVU's offense is doing very well this weekend, how early do you think Stew would put in some of the backups, particularly Coley White or Eugene Smith?

Colin Dunlap: If I'm the guy wearing the headset, I play Geno Smith a bit in the second quarter to get his feet wet. Then after halftime, assuming the game is about in hand, I let Brown have a series or two before handing it over to Smith...from there, i let Smith play and then get Coley some time in the fourth.

WVUJAGGER: Not a WVU only question but still relevant - does the BE need to expand to 9 football teams, and if so who would you like to see in the conference?

Colin Dunlap: I think, yes, there needs to be more teams...who those teams are, well, the pickins are slim. Everyone would obviously want Notre Dame, but that isn't going to happen. Who knows from there? ECU? Memphis?

Colin Dunlap: OK, time for one or two more.

CoachStew: Can Tyler Urban from Norwin be a difference maker?

Colin Dunlap: Looks that way. I did a story on him a few weeks ago in which Jarrett Brown called him his "safety net" or something of the sort. I know that Jarrett Brown loves the big TE from Norwin. As does Bill Stewart. As does O-coordinator Jeff Mullen. I look for Urban to catch as many passes in the first three weeks this year than he did all of last season.

schrute: Season prediction?

Colin Dunlap: Both WVU and Pitt go into the Backyard Brawl undefeated in the Big East....and from there it is anyone's guess.

Colin Dunlap: Alright folks. Good work for the first time, it should grow from here, but this was a very solid turn out for the first chat. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, heck, tell your enemies about this chat every Thursday at 2 pm. See you next week -- same time, same place.
