Verona firm wins notice for good labor ties
Thursday, September 03, 2009

A Verona printing shop made the national American Rights At Work Labor Day list of businesses that work well with unions.

Print and Copy Center on Allegheny River Boulevard has 11 employees, but three of them -- prepress and bindery employees -- are members of the Graphics Communications Conference of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.

The company was highlighted, along with seven others, on the list from the Washington, D.C.-based advocacy group. The list highlights businesses that have good relationships between management and labor unions, which, the organization said, shows that "economic success does not have to come at the expense of workers' rights."

Print and Copy Center owner James O'Malley said he remains competitive because his employees are committed to providing quality work and excellent customer service.

Mr. O'Malley said he grew up in a union household: His father was a police officer and his uncles were firefighters. Therefore, when he opened his own business, he knew it would be a union shop.

"For me, it was a natural," he said. Print and Copy Center has had a union for more than a dozen years.

The union label that he can affix to all of his jobs also has helped Mr. O'Malley bring in printing jobs, particularly from other unions and from political campaigns.

The contract has not hindered his business, he said. "My employees get over and above what the contract calls for," he said because he believes that if the company does well, everyone should benefit.

The other companies on the fifth annual Labor Day List are:

• American Income Life Insurance Co., which has 3,600 employees and is based in Waco, Texas;

• Ivory Leathers Inc., an apparel manufacturer with six employees in West Fargo, N.D.;

• McGuire Scenic, of Indianapolis, which builds scenery for theatrical productions and exhibits for museums and corporations with a staff that fluctuates between 12 and 45 people;

• Morton Williams Supermarkets, based in New York City with 12 stores and 750 employees;

• Raymonds Painting and Decorating Inc., of Denver, which employs 28 to 63 union painters;

• West Sheet Metal Co., of Sterling, Va., which employs 60 people, 57 of them union sheet metal workers; and

• Wisconsin Vision Inc. of New Berlin, Wis., which has 200 employees, including 130 union members who work as sales people, opticians and lab technicians.
