CINCINNATI -- As expected, the Pirates today summoned a small number of reserves on the first day when major-league rosters expanded, though more players are expected in a week after Class AAA Indianapolis completes its schedule.

Recalled were third baseman Neil Walker of Pine-Richland High and right-handed pitcher Virgil Vasquez, who went 2-5 with a 6.09 ERA in seven Pirates starts from June 26 to Aug. 1. Both are likely to play, though Vasquez may well return to the starting rotation deeper in September once Ross Ohlendorf and Kevin Hart reach their season innings limits.
