Cooksburg petroglyphs Sept. 5
Centuries ago, American Indians in what is now Venango and Clairion counties documented their environment on boulders. Cook Forest State Park examines the petroglyphs in two educational programs. At 3 p.m. park officials lead a challenging hike over slippery, wet and steep terrain to view some of the petroglyphs. The hike is difficult. Children and adults with physical ailments are advised not to attend.
At 8 p.m. at the Ridge Camp Park Amphitheater, Ken Burkett, executive director of Jefferson County Historical Society, presents a slide show of his recent work on Indian petroglyph sites, and discusses recent theories on the markings' origin, cultural affiliations and relationship to other rock art sites in the Upper Ohio Valley.
