'Dr. Oz' steps out for new show

Oprah first gave us "Dr. Phil" and now she spins off again with "Dr. Oz" (12:30 p.m. weekdays beginning Sept. 14, WPXI), a health-focused talk show hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz, previously seen on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

"Our goal is to be the show of record as it relates to health and wellness," said "Dr. Oz" executive producer Mindy Borman at a press conference for the program earlier this month in Pasadena, Calif.

But the goal is to make it enjoyable and not too heavy. Oz isn't afraid to be blunt in talk about anatomy or medical issues. He says it's necessary if the show is to have an impact on its viewers.

"You actually have to give people the real anatomy," Oz said. "Tell them what's really happening. Don't break it down and baby it. What does it actually feel like to have that problem?"

Each day's show will have a multi-topic format, beginning with a medical story of the day that Oz puts in context. The show becomes more playful deeper into the hour, including using volunteers from the studio audience as lab rats.

"Any advice or information that's disseminated by Dr. Oz we try on them," Borman said. In addition, elements from his appearances on "Oprah" will be featured, including animation that helps Oz take a complex topic and make it more understandable.

"Dr. Oz," which tapes in New York, will not prevent Oz from returning to "Oprah," which tapes in Chicago.

"I still feel part of the 'Oprah' family," Oz said. "I communicated last week with Ms. Winfrey about a bunch of stuff. ... And if it makes sense for the 'Oprah' audience to have Dr. Oz on their show, I'd be honored, as I always have been, to play a role in it."

"Dr. Oz" will have a second run on PCNC at 1:30 p.m. weekdays.

Also in syndication on WPXI:

"Who Wants to be a Millionaire" moves to 1:30 p.m. weekdays and "Family Feud" relocates to 4 a.m.

Channel 11 will add "The Brian McKnight Show" (1:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 27), a one-hour program that will feature appearances by Hollywood stars, musicians, athletes and comedians.

Other syndicated shows

No changes planned at KDKA, but other stations have new syndicated shows ready to air in the coming weeks.

WBGN: The low-power station loses "Martha Stewart" to WPGH (see below) and gains reruns of MTV series "Laguna Beach" (8 p.m. weekdays, Sept. 21) and "The Hills" (8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27).

The station also debuts "Inside Music Row" (5 p.m. Sunday, this weekend), an entertainment news program devoted to covering the world of country music.

WPCW: Reruns of "The Office" begin airing in syndication at 7 and 7:30 p.m. weekdays starting Sept. 21. Viewers may be surprised to revisit this comedy from the beginning.

"Michael was more of an antagonist that first season," said executive producer Greg Daniels during a press conference on the show's warehouse set in Van Nuys, Calif., earlier this month. "And [later] he became much more of a person that you rooted for."

To make way for "The Office," "Everybody Loves Raymond" reruns will shift to 2:30 and 11 p.m.

Also new to WPCW: "Judge Hatchett" moves over from WPMY (10 and 10:30 a.m. weekdays, Sept. 7); reruns of "America's Funniest Home Videos" (1 p.m. weekdays, Sept. 14) and "Cold Case Files" (2 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28).

WPGH: "Martha Stewart," which had been airing on WBGN, moves over to Channel 53, airing weekdays at 5 a.m. beginning Sept. 14.

Reruns of "My Name Is Earl" slide into the 6:30 and 11:30 p.m. weekday time slots starting Sept. 21 and new "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader?" episodes air at 5 p.m. beginning the same date.

"Street Court" (noon weekdays, Sept. 21) is a new court show that moves out of the court room as "Judge Mazz" takes litigants back to the scene of the dispute.

WPMY: Courtroom shows also turn up in the daytime lineup on Channel 22, including "Judge Alex" (10 a.m. weekdays, Sept. 21) and "Judge Jeanine Pirro" (11 a.m. weekdays, Sept. 21). Talk show "Bonnie Hunt" shifts to 3 p.m. on Sept. 7 to make room for "The Wendy Williams Show" (Sept. 14).

"Bones" enters syndication with episodes airing at 7 p.m. Sunday starting Sept. 27.

Other reruns: "Everybody Hates Chris" (4 a.m. weekdays starting Sept. 14 and 10 p.m. Sunday beginning Sept. 20), "Law & Order: SVU" (10 p.m. weekdays, Sept. 21) and "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (11 p.m. weekdays, Sept. 14).

In addition, WPMY's prime time takes on a syndicated feel as My Network TV shifts from original programming to reruns (except on Friday where "WWE Smackdown" continues). Two episodes of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" air Monday nights, new "Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader" episodes and "Deal or No Deal" reruns take over Tuesday, back-to-back reruns of "The Unit" air Wednesday and a movie airs Thursday.

WTAE: Reruns of "Grey's Anatomy" will air at 1:05 a.m. Sunday beginning Sept. 20. A second episode will air at midnight Sunday starting the same day.

HBO Labor Day pre-empts

HBO will rest its Sunday night series Labor Day weekend. "True Blood" and "Hung" will return for their season finales Sept. 13. "Entourage" will continue with new episodes through Oct. 4.

Kennedy coverage

Cable networks CNN and Fox News Channel, among others, will cover a memorial service for U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy today at 7 p.m. Coverage of Kennedy's funeral will air live at 10 a.m. Saturday.
