Dawnshalay Williams, a sophomore, has been elected president of the Student Government Association at Penn State Beaver.

Also elected were sophomores Jonathan White as vice president and Sara Hunkele as secretary.

Abraham Atallah, Stephanie Shearer and Nathan Campbell are senior class representatives.

• Ana Zampogna, 18, of Moon, who graduated in June from Moon Area High School, finished first in the Narrative Nonfiction category of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Ralph Munn Creative Writing Contest.

Her piece, "The River," was among more than 100 entries and will be included in a small book with other pieces. The book will be distributed to libraries upon its release later this summer.

The contest recognizes the writing talent of Allegheny County high school students in short fiction, narrative nonfiction and poetry categories, and a panel of three judges selects first- and second-place winners as well as an honorable mention recipient. The conest is named in honor of Mr. Munn, who was the library's director from 1928 until 1964.

• Kelly Kaminski, who graduated in June from Moon Area High School, is the grand-prize winner of the 2009 Edgar Snyder & Associates Words to be Heard scholarship contest. Kelly won a $2,500 scholarship that she will use at the Ohio State University.

Seniors attending high schools throughout Pittsburgh, Erie and central Pennsylvania were invited to write a 1,000-word proposal for a program that would teach pre-teens and teenagers the consequences associated with underage drinking.

Kelly's idea is to create a three-step program that would include speakers, a slide show and a demonstration on the dangers of underage drinking and drinking and driving.

• Metallic Monster, a poem written by Annabel Lorence of South Fayette, has been published in the publication Inspired, a collection of poetry scheduled for release in the fall.

Her work was selected by the editorial staff of the American Library of Poetry in a nationwide contest.

Annabel's poem was submitted for consideration by her eighth-grade language arts teacher at Holy Child Catholic School in Bridgeville. She is a freshman at Bishop Canevin High School.

• West Allegheny High School students Katie Hough and Derek Faix placed in the top ten in the country at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference in July in California. Katie, a senior, placed seventh in the Economics category and Derek, a sophomore, placed ninth in Client Service.
