The school district exceeded all 2009 proficiency targets established by the Pennsylvania Department of Education in accordance with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. As a result, the district and its nine schools, including all subgroups, have once again met Adequate Yearly Progress. Such progress is measured by student achievement on the annual PSSA tests in math and reading, administered in the spring. To achieve adequate yearly progress, at least 63 percent of students must score advanced or proficient in reading and 56 percent in math.
In 2011, proficiency targets will be raised to 67 percent in math and 72 percent in reading. The most recent North Hills scores have already exceeded those targets at every grade level. According to the federal law, all students must reach proficiency in reading and math by 2014.
