Robbery suspect captured after lengthy chase
Wednesday, August 26, 2009

A South Oakland man, suspected of robbing a hotel in Westmoreland County overnight, was captured early today after a police chase and manhunt across two counties.

Evan Ezell, 18, was to be arraigned this morning in Allegheny County on charges that include aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, fleeing and eluding police, and loitering and prowling at night, said North Versailles Police Chief James Comunale.

Police had begun searching for the suspect shortly after a holdup around 2 a.m. at the Rodeway Inn on Route 30 in Hempfield.

No one was injured in the robbery, although the suspect used a pistol.

Around 6 a.m. authorities were told of a sighting of the suspect headed west on Route 30.

The suspect fled in a car into Allegheny County. On the way, state police reported seeing sparks fly from a pistol that was tossed from the suspect's vehicle.

Chief Comunale said investigators don't know whether Mr. Ezell fired any shots at the officers in pursuit.

Once inside the North Versailles boundary, Mr. Ezell crashed and abandoned his vehicle at Jacks Run Road. Another sighting was reported near a convenience store about a mile from the crash.

Officers from state police, North Versailles and other communities joined the search that eventually centered in a neighborhood behind East Allegheny High School. The searchers also included a state police helicopter and K-9 officers with dogs.

One officer, Kelly Bowers of North Versailles, was injured during the foot chase when she struck her head on a fence just before the arrest.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Mr. Ezell was being questioned this morning by state police.

Police said they had not determined whether Mr. Ezell acted alone in the holdup.

No other arrests have been made.
