A mountain bike rider from Maine was killed yesterday when he apparently crashed his bicycle while riding down a steep hillside in Bradys Run Park in Brighton, Beaver County.
A woman who had been jogging in the park found the unresponsive body of Robert G. Anderson, 44, around 3:15 p.m. He was at the bottom of the hillside in a remote location off Beacom Drive and Brady Ridge Road just outside the park, Beaver County Deputy Coroner William Pasquale said.
Mr. Anderson, of Long Island, Maine, had been in Beaver County with his daughter to visit his mother in New Brighton.
Mr. Anderson, an avid biker, formerly lived in the region, Mr. Pasquale said. However, yesterday might have been Mr. Anderson's first ride on the Bradys Run trail.
Investigators believe Mr. Anderson lost control of his bike while riding downhill on a trail that runs throughout the park. The bike appears to have struck something that caused the rider to be flung forward.
Police said he might have struck his head on a rock.
"At this time we have no reason to believe it's anything other than an accident," Mr. Pasquale said this morning.
An autopsy is scheduled today to determine the cause of death.
Although Mr. Anderson wore a helmet, his injury was to the side of his head, between his temple and right eye and below the edge of the protective gear.
