Rose Marie Motznik, a longtime Democratic committeewoman for Pittsburgh's 19th Ward, died Sunday from complications following liver transplant surgery two months ago. She was mentioned in an Aug. 4 Post-Gazette story on liver transplants.

Mrs. Motznik, 70, of Brookline, volunteered in the community for years supporting her children's activities when they were young and, more recently, helping the elderly.

"She was always a baker, always providing the goodies. Food, food; it was all about food," recalled her daughter, Rosanne Caddy.

Born May 20, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Rose Marie Garrubba grew up in the Hill District. She and her husband of 48 years, Edward F. Motznik, have four children -- Edward J., Jim, Joseph A. and Rosanne. Jim Motznik is a Pittsburgh city councilman.

Her daughter recalled that her mother worked for Lachina Drapery Co. in Brookline after her youngest child entered school, until the shop moved from the neighborhood. Mrs. Motznik also worked as a cake decorator for Blue Bonnet Bakery, now closed.

"She was always a mom who worked the refreshment stand at the baseball field," Mrs. Caddy said, adding that her mom was also her cheerleading coach in the early '80s at the Church of the Resurrection school in Brookline, now closed.

In addition to more than 20 years as committeewoman, Mrs. Motznik was a judge of elections, a member of the Women's Guild of the Church of the Resurrection and a volunteer with the elderly at the Elizabeth Seton Center and the free bus service for Brookline seniors run by St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband and children, three grandchildren, and her brothers Frank, Nick, Anthony and James Garrubba.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today in the Church of the Resurrection.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Liver Foundation.
