Man sentenced for shooting, mutilating dog
Tuesday, August 18, 2009

A Penn Hills man was sentenced today for shooting and mutilating a dog in Homewood two years ago.

Jamarow W. Trowery, 32, was convicted in May on a weapons charge in the case, in which he shot the dog, cut off its paw and left it in a garbage bag. Today he pleaded guilty to an amended summary count of animal cruelty.

Common Pleas Judge Kathleen A. Durkin sentenced him to five to 10 years in prison for the weapons charge; there was no further penalty on the animal cruelty charge. As a convicted felon, it was illegal for him to possess a firearm.

Mr. Trowery was supposed to be caring for Buju, a 4-year-old pitt bull-German shepherd mix, in September 2007. He was on probation on federal gun charges at the time.

Police said Mr. Trowery shot the dog in the torso, severed its right paw and attempted to decapitate the animal. The dog was found in a garbage bag at the corner of Susquehanna and Pitt streets.
