Family Fishing Derby and Walkabout Aug. 15

Easy access from the city, lots of hungry bass and panfish, loaner rods, free bait, no need for a fishing license, and if boredom ensues somebody will take the disinterested party for a walk. Could there be a better excuse to take your kid fishing? Venture Outdoor's Family Fishing Derby and Walkabout provides everything the wannabe angler needs to get started. The catch-and-release fishing contest at South Side Riverfront Park, under the Birmingham Bridge, is designed for families who don't fish often. Equipment and assistance are available; through special arrangement with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, participants 16 years old and above who don't have a valid fishing license are urged to arrive promptly at noon for a workshop before they can fish. To buy a fishing license, go to a license distributor (locations available at www.fish.state.pa.us). Guides will be around to lead short nature hikes throughout the day. Here's a fishing tip: Bass like structure in or overhanging the water. Look for those habitats at Riverfront Park. Noon-3 p.m., $20 per family, $5 individuals. 412-255-0564 ext. 4.
