Sinkhole closes section of Route 88 in Washington Co.
Friday, August 07, 2009

A sinkhole caused by mine subsidence closed Route 88 at Allenport in Washington County yesterday.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Jay Ofsanik said the hole was about 12 feet wide and 20 feet deep, and forced closure of the road in both directions at about 11:15 a.m. yesterday.

Maintenance crews hoped to have a single lane open for alternating use by yesterday afternoon, he said. The restriction is expected to be in place for about three weeks, until repairs are completed, he said.
