Pool party in Dormont

Ahhh, those -- all together now -- "Sum-ah-mer ... Ni-ites ...!" (Think "Grease.")

We can all enjoy a night of poolside dancing under the stars and do good work at the same time. It's possible during a special fundraiser for little Sadie Terrick and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 16 at the Dormont Pool.

Sadie, 5, daughter of Shane and Abby Terrick, of Fox Chapel, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis eight days after birth. CF is a chronic lung disease causing serious breathing and digestive problems. Sadie, her parents and brother, Oliver, 3, plan to attend.

The event is sponsored in part by Brian Supler, of Washington, who was recently named by the foundation's Western Pennsylvania chapter as one of "Pittsburgh's 50 Finest" eligible professionals. The designation is based, in part, on community involvement and entrepreneurial endeavors.

Mr. Supler recently returned to Pittsburgh from New York City and works in design, marketing and philanthropy.

Dormont Mayor Thomas Lloyd has proclaimed the day Sadie Terrick Day. And, participants at the poolside dance are encouraged to dress up as their "summer inspirations." Suggests Mr. Supler: "Think Joan Jett, Mick Jagger, Twiggy, or that superhero you always wanted to be."

Note: Because there will be alcohol, no swimming will be permitted.

Tickets -- $20 -- include alcoholic beverages, food and music and are available by calling 724-288-3986, or e-mailing briansupler@gmail.com. Each ticket will be redeemable for $3 off the price of admission for a future visit to the pool -- when you can splash down.

Tee off for troops with former Steelers

Golf, the Super Bowl champion Steelers -- plus a time to show support for our veterans -- combine to form the Steelers Alumni Golf Outing, a fundraiser that benefits the Golf Supports Our Troops organization.

The group, founded three years ago, donates golf and exercise equipment to rehabilitation departments at U.S. military medical centers and Veterans Affairs hospitals.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11 with a shot-gun start at Pittsburgh Field Club. A former Steeler will join each foursome.

Tickets cost $750 and include an awards luncheon and dinner at Heinz Field's East Club. Call 1-866-441-4100.

Cool reward for good deeds

"Operation Chill" has West Mifflin police branching out from their usual search for bad guys to keep an eye out for the good guys. This program rewards kids caught doing good deeds with a coupon for a 7-Eleven Slurpee. Those deeds can include helping another person or participating in positive community activities. Since 7-Eleven started Operation Chill in 1995, nearly 10 million coupons have been distributed nationwide. About 300 will be distributed in West Mifflin this summer.
