If the Pirates' Lastings Milledge seemed to stand out in PNC Park's left field last night, there was a reason: He was wearing bright, stylish shoes -- -- mostly white with black stripes, enhanced by gold laces -- that do not conform to Major League Baseball's uniform policy.
MLB has a rule in its Basic Agreement with the players' union that says shoes must be 51 percent the team's primary color. In the Pirates' case, the shoe color must be predominantly black.
"We will address the issue with Lastings," team president Frank Coonelly said last night.
Milledge also pulled his socks high for the first time, making the shoes stand out all the more. He said he was told after the game that he can continue to wear the shoes so long as the pants are down.
The shoes, made by the manufacturer 3N2, are worn by one other player in the majors, according to the company's site. That is Boston Red Sox pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, a Rule 5 draft pick currently on the disabled list.
