Masters champion Angel Cabrera will get another green jacket today -- this time from Oakmont Country Club.
Cabrera, 39, of Argentina, will return to Oakmont for the first time since winning the 2007 U.S. Open and will be presented a green jacket as an honorary member of the club -- something Oakmont historically has done for all its past major champions.
Cabrera will play golf in the afternoon with his father; son, Federico; and agent, Manuel Tagle Jr., then be honored for his Open victory at a barbecue dinner for members and guests. He will be presented Oakmont's green jacket at the ceremony.
"We've been wanting to do this for some time, but we were never able to find the right time that fit his schedule," said Oakmont golf professional Bob Ford. "We're delighted to have him back."
Until his one-shot victory over Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk at Oakmont, Cabrera had never won a major championship. But, after becoming the first player from Argentina to win a major in 40 years, he added another one in April with a playoff victory over Kenny Perry at the Masters, which presents a green jacket to the winner.
Oakmont officials took great delight in Cabrera's Masters victory because it validated his surprising victory at Oakmont.
"It was great for us," Ford said.
"Two majors in a couple years really helps us," said Oakmont general manager Tom Wallace.
During his visit, Cabrera also will be shown the room in the club's newest guest cottage, which overlooks the swimming pool, that bears his name. It is located on the second floor of the cottage and is down the hall from rooms that bear the names of Steve Melnyk (1969 U.S. Amateur champion) and Gene Sarazen (1922 PGA), other past winners at Oakmont.
