After a couple of days of testing Pittsburgh's unpredictable rivers in pre-tournament fishing, Rusty Salewske of Alpine, Calif., wasn't sure if he'd catch a fish.
Entering the final day of the Forrest Wood Cup, he has got the weight to beat and is one good day of fishing away from $1 million.
Salewske turned in 6 pounds, 6 ounces of smallmouth bass -- one of only three five-fish limits weighed on Day 3.
"When practice was over, I didn't know if I would catch one," he said. "Every day I've had to figure out what they're doing."
Going into the final day of fishing, David Curtis of Trinity, Texas, is in second place with 5 pounds, 7 ounces.
"In this place, you have to work hard," Curtis said. "Things have changed every day out there."
Cody Meyer of Redding, Calif., is third in standings with 5 pounds even. New Jersey's Michael Iaconelli weighed four fish at 4 pounds, 12 ounces, to rank fourth in the standings.
"The conditions are changing," said Iaconelli. "There's a lot of current. What [fish] were doing now is totally different than what they were doing Thursday."
Dave Lefebre of Erie County pulled only one keeper from the same Ohio River sweet spot he has fished throughout the tournament.
But it was a whopper for these parts, tipping the scale at 3 pounds, 15 ounces.
"I got that one on the last cast of the day," Lefebre said. "That was the best moment of my entire fishing career, since I was 10."
Larry Nixon of Arkansas was penalized for bringing in a fish under 12 inches.
At the conclusion of the co-angler series, Brad Roberts of Nancy, Ky., took home the $50,000 top prize with a 6-pound, 4-ounce total. West Virginia's Blaine Bucy finished fifth, winning $7,000 for one bass weighing 12 ounces.
"It's pretty much been a struggle since the first day," he said. "I lost a few fish today, but that's fishing."
Clark Wendlandt of Leander, Texas, was named Land o' Lakes Angler of the Year for the third year running, winning $25,000 and a Ranger Boat.
In a sparkling pyrotechnic celebration at Mellon Arena, Kentucky's Terry Moberly was awarded $1 million in the FLW Fantasy Fishing series.
