Man faces trial on rape charges in Wilkinsburg
Friday, July 31, 2009

Three women testified at a preliminary hearing yesterday against a Penn Hills man who was ordered to stand trial on charges that he was the armed assailant who attacked them on the streets of Wilkinsburg in May and June.

Rickie Robe Richburg IV, 22, already is awaiting trial in connection with the rape of a fourth victim who testified against him on Monday in Penn Hills.

Wilkinsburg District Judge Kim Hoots ordered Mr. Richburg held for court and returned to the Allegheny County Jail, where he is being held without bail pending trial.

A 17-year-old technical school student testified yesterday that she was attacked May 18 on Mill Street in the borough. The girl said she was walking home sometime between 10 and 11 p.m., talking on her cell phone, when she was confronted by a gunman.

"You scream and I'll kill you," the girl said the gunman threatened.

The attacker put the gun to her head, snatched her purse and phone before she could hang up, and forced her to perform a sex act.

The girl ran home and police were called. Investigators collected semen samples from the scene. The DNA examination indicated that Mr. Richburg was the suspect, county police Detective Venerando Costa testified.

Six days later, on May 24, another woman was attacked as she was about to enter her apartment building. The woman said Mr. Richburg, whom she said she recognized from television news footage of his arrest, forced her to drive with him in her car to a secluded location where she was raped and forced to perform a sex act.

Afterward, he ordered the woman to drive him to North Avenue and Coal Street, where he got out of the car.

Samples of DNA were taken during a hospital exam, and matched DNA markers obtained from Mr. Richburg.

Both victims testified that the suspect used a small, black pistol.

Mr. Richburg had faced a weapons charge when arrested. Assistant District Attorney Courtney Butterfield withdrew the gun count because Mr. Richburg was licensed to carry the pistol.

The final victim, who was attacked on the night of June 21, was the first to testify that she saw Mr. Richburg's face before the assault. He had passed her in his vehicle as she walked on Mill Street, and he warned her that dogs were loose in the direction she was headed.

The woman said she took another route only to find the suspect had driven around the block. He wore a ski mask and head covering when he got from his vehicle and approached her with a knife.

"If you scream, I'll stab you," she said her attacker warned before he forced her to remove her pants and perform a sex act. He then raped her, she said.

Again, DNA from the assault matched Mr. Richburg's, Detective Costa testified.
