When Amy Lynn Kucsmas' brother and sister didn't hear from their 36-year-old sister for several days, they knew something was wrong.
She had been a drug user, but had been clean for nearly two years before admitting that she had starting using drugs again in the last two months. Still, her siblings said, they talked to her by phone at least once a day and she always returned their calls.
They last saw her on July 10 and hadn't heard from her since then.
Their fears were realized yesterday when the Allegheny County medical examiner's office confirmed that the woman whose body was found last Friday wrapped inside a rolled-up carpet in a Wilkinsburg park was Ms. Kucsmas, of Mount Oliver, the mother of three teenage children.
Allegheny County police and the county's crime lab identified Ms. Kucsmas from a distinctive tattoo and a fingerprint lifted from her left index finger. Dental records confirmed her identity.
Wilkinsburg public works employees discovered the body in the borough's Hunter Park. Police said the partially clad body had likely been there for weeks.
The cause of Ms. Kucsmas' death is unknown, but police are treating it as a homicide while awaiting the results of further tests.
She had a history of arrests for crimes such as retail theft, forgery, identity theft, drug charges, and most recently a June prostitution arrest, according to court records.
Ms. Kucsmas' sister, Jayme, 32, and a brother, Tim, 35, both of Liberty, said their sister had been off drugs for two years but had a relapse about two months ago.
"I don't know if she met up with a different crowd, but for the past couple years, she was clean more than she wasn't," Tim Kucsmas said.
Jayme Kucsmas said she and her sister had lunch Downtown on July 10. During lunch, Ms. Kucsmas said, her sister told her she was planning to check herself into a drug treatment facility.
Tim Kucsmas' wife, Gina, said they had seen news reports about the body being found and assumed the worst. "We had seen breaking news on KDKA that a body was found in Wilkinsburg, so we kind of knew it was coming," she said.
Ms. Kucsmas leaves behind three children: a daughter, Kayla, 18; a son, Shane, 17, and a daughter, Katie, 13. None were living with their mother.
