National Aviary holds benefit
Tuesday, July 28, 2009

The monsoon season was averted, much to the relief of the more than 600 guests who migrated over to the National Aviary Saturday for "Night in the Tropics." The annual benefit, which helps bolster the bottom line for the birds, began with a reception for 200 VIPs and some ominous cloud cover. Not to worry, the VIP bar was tented, along with the central outdoor party.

Executive director Patrick Mangus and event chairs Jane and Michael Dixon greeted everyone at the entrance with help from Red, the scarlet macaw, and Dillon, a martial eagle.

As more island-attired attendees arrived, the aviary's residents were treated to a colorful display of plumage while the party people filed by their exhibits. Food and libation stations were everywhere, keeping the flocks of feathered admirers moving throughout the building. Once they jumped into the water, Simon and his fellow African penguins were a big hit, zooming and bobbing to the delight of onlookers. A bird show in the rose garden gave the non-swimmers a chance to show off their own tricks. Among those marveling at what bird brains can really do were Robin and Rosemary Miller, Ron and Leslie Ashburn, George Koenig with daughter Lauren, board member Gregg Ramshaw with the PG's Mary Leonard, board chair Mike Flinn with Eileen, Kim and Bob Fanelli, John and Marylou Price, David and Susan Lohr, and Doug and Kim Matthews.
