Vernon Forrest, 38, a former three-time champion who gained stardom when he became the first boxer to defeat "Sugar" Shane Mosley, was shot "multiple times in the back" and killed in an apparent robbery in Atlanta, police said yesterday.
Forrest was shot Saturday, but police have no suspects.
Forrest, a native of Augusta, Ga., who lived in Atlanta, was a member of the 1992 Olympic team. He also was a former IBF welterweight and two-time WBC junior middleweight champion.
Forrest, who had a 41-3 career record with 29 knockouts, is the third prominent boxer to die this month. Former two-time champion Arturo Gatti, who retired in 2007, was found dead July 11 at a Brazilian resort. Gatti's wife, Amanda Rodrigues, is being held as the prime suspect. Another former champion, Alexis Arguello, was found dead on July 1 at his home in Managua, Nicaragua, in an apparent suicide.
The Cleveland Browns signed second-round pick David Veikune, a linebacker from Hawaii who was the third of the team's three second-round choices. ... The Denver Broncos signed second-round pick Alphonso Smith, a defensive back from Wake Forest, to a four-year deal.
The Boston Bruins signed free-agent defenseman Derek Morris, 30, to a one-year contract. Morris played last season with the Phoenix Coyotes and New York Rangers.
Crystal Langhorne scored 19 points and Lindsey Harding added 16 to lead the host Washington Mystics (9-7) to an 87-73 WNBA victory against the Sacramento Monarchs (4-15). ... David Sale, a 22-year-old Lansdale, Pa., resident attending a bachelor party at a bar next to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, was beaten to death during a melee outside. Police said a group from the bachelor party got into a fight Saturday night with other patrons at a sports bar.
