All's well that ends well for former Pitt stars Sam Young and DeJuan Blair. Nearly a month after feeling the disappointment of falling to the second round of the NBA Draft, both players have guaranteed contracts worth millions with their new NBA teams.
One week after Blair signed a contract with the San Antonio Spurs with nearly $3 million in guaranteed money, Young will sign his contract with the Memphis Grizzlies this morning.
He will get nearly $2 million in guaranteed money.
Young will sign a three-year contract with a club option for the third year. He will make nearly $900,000 in the first and second years of the contract, all of which is guaranteed.
Young's agent, Lance Young, also has $600,000 worth of incentives written into the contract for accomplishments such as making the NBA all-rookie team.
Young was supposed to sign the contract yesterday, but he is on vacation and there was some confusion about where the contract was sent. He will sign today, according to his agent, who said Sam wanted a shorter term contract because of his age.
"Sam was disappointed on draft night, but it was almost a blessing in disguise," Lance Young said.
"He can be a free agent in three years instead of four. Sam is confident that he is going to be able to play well enough that he will be able to cash in after three years. That was important to him because he's 24 years old."
In the NBA only first-round draft picks are guaranteed to receive guaranteed contracts, but Lance Young said about 10 or 15 second-round picks end up signing for guaranteed money. Others sign deals where they only are paid if they make the team.
"Sam feels good about it," Lance Young said. "The Grizzlies stepped up and paid him well.
"He's going to be making a nice salary."
Young and Blair were selected consecutively in the second round with the 36th and 37th picks. They are the first Pitt players in 11 years to sign NBA contracts in the same year.
In 1988, Charles Smith and Jerome Lane were first-round selections and received NBA contracts.
