Lasoski captures Martin
Friday, July 24, 2009

The Don Martin Memorial Twin 30-lap features did not disappoint the crowd that returned for the rain-delayed Silver Cup XVIII Wednesday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver.

Danny Lasoski and Stevie Smith split the first Don Martin Memorial Twin-30s. Lasoski, a World of Outlaw sprint car driver from Dover, Mo., won the first 30-lap feature, claiming the $15,000 first-place prize for his first career win at Lernerville. The victory, combined with a seventh-place finish in the second 30-lap event, gave Lasoski his first Silver Cup.

"It's an honor to win the Don Martin," Lasoski said. "It's a race that everyone wants to win. I had finished second here quite a few times."

Lasoski battled pole-sitter Jason Sides for the first 20 laps before taking over the top spot. Lasoski was followed by Sides, Steve Kinser, Tim Kaeding and Aliquippa's Tim Shaffer.

Smith, of Broken Arrow, Okla., won the second 30-lap race, collecting $15,000 for the victory. He started seventh after finishing 13th in the first feature.

"I think this is a special track for us because of what Don [Martin] built here," Smith said. "It's one of our favorite tracks. It's an honor to win any race, but the first place I ever won a race was here at Lernerville."

Smith does not race with the Outlaws on a regular basis, but the Tower City, Pa.-based team was second with four laps to go before Smith passed race leader Danny Smith. Jac Haudenschild finished second, with Danny Smith taking third. Craig Dollansky and Joey Saldana rounded out the top five.
