SAN DIEGO -- If there's one thing Electronic Arts is known for, it's consistency. But the sports video game giant showed off a variety, too, during a Comic-Con International showcase in the Gaslamp District.
While EA's tried and true franchises, "Madden" and "Need for Speed," were represented by their latest iterations, a few original titles found their way into the lineup.
The behemoth is "Madden NFL 10," the one franchise EA can always count on for a sizable return, which will be released for the Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and PSP Aug. 14. Luckily for gamers, the makers aren't satisfied with success; art director Tim Spangler stressed that they are dedicated to innovation as well.
"Madden 10," featuring Steeler Troy Polamalu and Cardinal Larry Fitzgerald on the cover, was available to be demoed only for the Wii, and it has come a long way since "Madden 07" introduced motion control to general gameplay.
The most notable straying from its more powerful 360 and PS3 counterparts is with the graphics. Instead of going for ultra realism, EA Sports opted for a stylized look that emphasizes the differences in character models.
The intuitive running system hasn't changed, but the throwing has two options now: point and flick, or click and flick. The former has you point the Wiimote at a receiver and flick to throw, and the latter has you press a direction on the D-pad and then flick.
New modes include a streamlined five vs. five mode that is almost more fun than core gameplay. And at the end of the day, there's nothing like being a Steelers fan because they reign supreme in the Madden world, just like in real life.
As rewarding as pounding Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers into the ground with James Harrison was and always will be, a new title stole the show.
"Brutal Legend" can be described as a third-person action brawler, where your weapons include an ax, a magic guitar and one of the sickest playable ATVs in gaming.
You play as Eddie Riggs, a roadie who is somehow transported to a dimension of killer monks who for some reason really, really, don't like him. The story seems pretty nonsensical, but it's supposed to feature voice cameos from legendary rockers, including Ozzy Osbourne.
Adding a cherry to the sweet sundae of gore and hot rocker chicks is that Eddie is voiced by actor and sometime Tenacious D frontman Jack Black. The game will be available for the PS3 and Xbox 360 on "Rocktober" 13.
