Where: Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, Slippery Rock.
How far: About an hour north of Downtown Pittsburgh.
What to do: Late July and early August is the height of the summer blooming season at the Jennings Environmental Education Center. It's the first reserve established in Pennsylvania to protect an individual plant species -- the blazing star -- and remains the only public and protected prairie in the commonwealth. On Sunday, there's a free, 90-minute guided walk discussing the plants, animals, history and geology of the prairie from 2 to 3:30 p.m. If you miss this session, another will be held at the same time, Aug. 2. The walk will begin in the prairie parking area. The prairie is hot and has little shade, so dress appropriately.
