More miles for your money
Thursday, July 23, 2009

With just a little effort, you could see a dramatic improvement in your bike's mileage. Here are some tips to get you started:

• Read your bike's manual and keep up with routine maintenance, like plugs and oil/air filters. If you don't have a manual, buy one.

• Maintain correct tire pressure. Your bike's motor has to work doubly hard to move a machine with low tire pressure.

• Keep your chain adjusted and lubed. If your bike is shaft driven, change the shaft oil when recommended

• Use the manufacturer's suggested engine oil

• Maintain your bike's cooling system properly. It's most often overlooked.

• If you've done any modifications to your bike, like an aftermarket exhaust, be sure your bike is properly jetted.

• Here's a tough one: Adjust your driving habits. Avoid quick starts and stops and shift at lower RPMs. It may be a challenge to change, but remember that Cycle World rider and his 23 percent!
