A task force set up to figure out what to do with the former Mayview State Hospital recommended yesterday that part of the site be used as a park, that the proceeds from a sale of the property be used for mental health care, and that a memorial be dedicated to those who once lived there.
None of the recommendations was a surprise, since all of the ideas had been vetted in previous meetings of the Mayview land reuse task force.
The next step is a public hearing on Tuesday before the task force, which is headed by state Sen. John Pippy, R-Moon, and state Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Robinson.
Greg Mahon, an aide to Mr. Pippy who has been handling administrative duties for the group, said no buyers have yet emerged. An appraisal of the 240-acre site is pending.
Mayview, which cared for the mentally ill, was closed by the state in 2008.
The report said that the property, which fronts Chartiers Creek along Mayview Road, will be divided into two parcels because of topography and access.
"The task force from the beginning viewed the property as two separate tracts," said Mr. Mahon.
The larger lower portion is flatter and has all the buildings, which will be sold as is by the Department of General Services.
The upper portion, steep and wooded, is adjacent to a park under construction by South Fayette Township. The task force recommended that any sales agreement be crafted so that South Fayette will get the land for recreational use.
The task force made these recommendations:
Make sure that General Services gets the best price.
Dedicate the proceeds to local housing for the mentally ill and for counseling services.
Preserve the wetlands, woods and slopes with conservation easements.
Establish an easement for a trail between the railroad line and Chartiers Creek.
Put all the easements under the protection of the Allegheny Land Trust.
Move two existing memorials, one on the lower portion of the site and another on nearby land owned by South Fayette, to a more central place with better public access.
The public hearing will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Regional Conference Room of the Dietary Building on the Mayview grounds.
