Field may be named after slain officer from Bloomfield
Thursday, July 16, 2009

Bloomfield's storied Dean's Field would be renamed for one of the three police officers killed in the April 4 shooting in Stanton Heights, under legislation submitted in Pittsburgh City Council Tuesday.

Officer Paul J. Sciullo II Memorial Field would honor the lifelong Bloomfield resident who played at the field as a child, according to the resolution that could be approved in the next two weeks. The Bloomfield Preservation and Heritage Society, Dennis Scullion and other Bloomfield residents suggested the change, which council members and Mayor Luke Ravenstahl embraced.

The field, now baseball-only, got a $400,000 renovation last year. It is named after the original owners of the property, who sold it to the city in 1922. It was briefly the home field of famed football quarterback Johnny Unitas when he played one season for the semipro Bloomfield Rams.
