• Shady Side Academy Senior School has awarded 2009 Parkin Fellowships to three students from the northern suburbs.

Tory Bruch, of Butler, received an award to develop an AIDS education program in Malawi, Africa, and volunteer in a hospital for patients with AIDS.

Kelly Casey-Latterman, of Fox Chapel, was given a fellowship to contribute to the building of a pre-primary school in South Africa.

Giovanni Zenati, of Fox Chapel, received an award to work in tree nurseries and educate people about problems of deforestation in Armenia.

• These Fox Chapel Area School District elementary string students were selected to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Elementary Honors Orchestra: Elliott Norman, Allison Gould, Elizabeth Heidenreich, Grace Kerr, Grace Mueller, Hannah Mueller, Liam Botos, Beatrice Burke, Stephen Polcyn, Konrad Urban and Olivia Van Dyke.

• Seven North Hills Junior High School students were named winners in the 2009 Holocaust Arts and Writing Competition, sponsored by the Holocaust Center of the United Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh.

In the Division I short story category, Lisa Carter won first place, Nicholas Kreider won second and Kelsey Mikeska won third place. Samantha Jamison finished second in the Division II short story category. Josh Martin took first place in performing arts; Julie Herr took second place in poetry; and John Witherel took third place in poetry.

• A team of students from Eden Christian Academy's Wexford campus in Pine took first place overall in the Pittsburgh Area Elementary Science Olympiad at Community College of Allegheny County's Allegheny Campus, placing in nine of the 12 events. Students on the team are Noah Bishop, Sam Blechman, Caleb Brake, Jesse Clary, Lauren Colella, Lauren Gronbeck, Thomas Krivak, Mimi Obley, Kayla Ostaffe, Nathan Rogers, Maddie Tissue and Laura Ward.

A team from the academy's Berkeley Hills campus in Ross placed fifth and had a first-place and two second-place wins.

• Two students at Kerr Elementary School in the Fox Chapel Area School District were winners in the regional 15th Annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers & Illustrators Contest. Theresa Heidenreich received first place for her entry, "The Perfect Pet," which was forwarded for judging in the national contest. Hannah Kim received a third-place award.

• North Allegheny School District students earned six of the top seven scores in the Annual Secondary School Chemistry Contest sponsored by the Pittsburgh Section of the American Chemical Society. In the advanced chemistry category, Konstantin Borisov took first place, Jinhua Zhu took second place and Edward Goncz took third place. In addition, Kevin Liu was awarded a $20,000 scholarship and Katherine Luo was awarded a $12,000 scholarship from the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh. The scholarships are based on success in the chemistry contest and school transcript, standardized scores and a written essay.

• Fox Chapel Area School District students won awards at the 75th Annual State Meeting of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. First-place state winners were Akansh Murthy, Haley Rothwell, Praveen Tummalapalli, Kohana Leuba, Rachel Stonehirsch, Sequoia Leuba, Alimpon Sinha, Stanley Wang, Ishan Chatterjee, Rohan Meringenti, Sarah Ogren, Manu Goyal, Bharat Iyer, Karthik Narayanan and Gautam Swamynathan.

Second-place state winners were Jessica Tarantine, Katharine Reineman and Susheel Khetarpal.

Akansh, Rachel and Rohan each received a Perfect Score Award. Akansh also received the Pennsylvania Science Teachers Association Award for Biology; Rohan received the D.E. Zappa Junior Award in Science; and Kohana received the Pennsylvania State University Eberly College of Science Scholarship.
