The opening of all-inclusive playgrounds at Allegheny County's Boyce and North parks has been delayed by bad weather.
The parks are having similar playgrounds installed that have equipment usable by children with disabilities. After heavy rain last month washed out part of the construction area in Boyce, near O'Block Playground off Monroeville Trestle Road (Center Road) in Plum, construction crews decided to concentrate their efforts there and complete that project first and finish North Park later, said Kevin Evanto, the county's director of communications.
Once finished at Boyce, the crews will return to the North Park playground. Some excavation has been done in North Park, he said, but none of the equipment has been put in place, he said.
In a news release, Mr. Evanto said the playgrounds are designed for children with disabilities but are meant to be enjoyed by all children.
Designed by Game Time, they will include wheelchair-accessible ramps and platforms wide enough to accommodate two wheelchairs side by side. The playgrounds are the first in Western Pennsylvania to include double-wide ramps and specialized swings for different age groups, Mr. Evanto said.
The playgrounds also includes handlebars at the slides and climbing walls. The North Park facility will be located near the swimming pool on South Ridge Drive.
Nearly half of Allegheny County's expenses for the playgrounds were funded by a $310,000 National Childhood Obesity Grant, Mr. Evanto said.
It's hoped the North Park playground will open by the first week August, he said.
