David Beckham said Los Angeles Galaxy teammate Landon Donovan was "unprofessional" for speaking out without confronting him first. Beckham, who was making his first public appearance in Southern California since returning from his five-month loan with Italian club AC Milan, said he had not spoken to Donovan, who called him a bad captain and portrayed him as stingy in an upcoming book "The Beckham Experiment," written by Grant Wahl. "It's unprofessional in my eyes. In every soccer player's eyes throughout the world it would be unprofessional to speak out about a teammate especially in the press and not to your face," Beckham said.
Monica Seles, 35, was enshrined in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Newport's grass courts. She was the world's No. 1 women's player for 178 weeks and a winner of nine Grand Slam singles titles. Seles was enshrined along with master's player Andres Gimeno, the oldest player to win the French Open at 34 years, 10 months. Dr. Robert Johnson was inducted posthumously.
Police in Brazil say former boxing champion Arturo Gatti has been found dead in a hotel room in the northeastern state of Pernambuco. Police investigator Edislon Alves told The Associated Press that the body of the former junior welterweight champ was discovered yesterday morning in the posh seaside resort of Porto de Galinhas, where he arrived Friday with his wife and 1-year-old son. Alves said police were investigating. It was unclear how the 37-year-old Canadian died. "It is still too early to say anything concrete, although it is all very strange," Alves said. A spokeswoman for the public safety department said Gatti's wife and son were unhurt.
Felix Sturm retained his WBA middleweight title, beating Khoren Gevor in a unanimous decision at the Ring Arena in Nuerburg, Germany. Sturm (33-2-1) relied on strong shots that stunned Gevor (30-4) several times in the 12-round fight.
Simphiwe Vetyeka of South Africa won the vacant IBO bantamweight title, beating Eric Barcelona of the Philippines by unanimous decision in Johannesburg. Vetyeka (21-1) had an advantage in weight, height and reach, and won on all the judges' cards at Emperor's Palace.
