A 21-year-old man was shot and killed in the Hill District last month after he told an armed robber he had no money and tried to drive away, according to court records.
Lonnelle Johnson, 19, was arrested during a traffic stop yesterday and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of Hoang "Tony" Nguyen of Lawrenceville.
Mr. Nguyen's brother, Thomas Nguyen, was also wounded in the shooting, which happened at Bedford Avenue and Junilla Street.
A witness, whose name was not released, identified Mr. Johnson as the shooter. He is charged with homicide, aggravated assault and two counts of robbery.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, Mr. Nguyen was stopped on Bedford Avenue in the early hours of June 26 when a short, dark-skinned black male got in the back seat and pointed an automatic pistol at him and demanded money.
Mr. Nguyen told the gunman he didn't have any money and he put the car in "drive." The gunman threatened to shoot if Mr. Nguyen tried to get away. Mr. Nguyen then stepped on the gas pedal, and the gunman fired several shots.
The car crashed, and the gunman fled.
Mr. Nguyen died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, and his brother, who was also in the car, was shot in the leg.
The witness later identified Mr. Johnson from a photo array.
Officers in Zone 2 stopped Mr. Johnson for a traffic violation about 4 p.m. yesterday. Detectives questioned him, and he was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.
