Lake Erie: Perch fishing remained strong in 50 to 56 feet off Walnut Creek and the point of the peninsula. Walleye fishing was reported in 25 to 30 feet off Walnut, with less productive catches coming in 50 to 60 feet. Walleye trollers also caught a few muskies, which is unusual for the open lake. Presque Isle Bay was yielding panfish and largemouth bass.
Allegheny River (Warren County): Walleyes up to 22 inches were reported in the river and lake, but the smallmouth bass bite was better in the river. Rainbow and brown trout up to 25 inches were hitting in the river. The lake was yielding perch, mostly 12 to 14 inches, and northern pike.
Canadohta Lake (Crawford County): Largemouth bass were reported in this 162-acre natural glacial lake.
Tamarack Lake (Crawford County): John Nestor of Murrysville caught a 12-pound, 36-inch muskie July 3 on a Hot n Tot. Small panfish also were reported on this 562-acre reservoir.
Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): Walleyes were hitting mainly during the day by anglers trolling deep water. Crappies were caught around deep structure. The muskie bite has slowed.
Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Largemouth bass and a good walleye bite were reported. Boaters were catching crappies suspended in 10 feet, and shore anglers were still landing crappies and bluegills under the main causeway.
Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Crappies were hitting in mixed sizes along with catfish.
Neshannock Creek (Mercer County): Terrestrials on top and small nymphs underneath were nabbing trout in low, clear conditions yesterday. Smallmouth bass were taking poppers mornings and evenings and crayfish and hellgrammites through the day.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Hybrid stripers up to 10 pounds were reported by evening boaters. Walleyes up to 24 inches also were caught, although the bite has slowed. Bass, catfish and nice-size bluegills also being caught.
Allegheny River: The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers landed 23 fish Wednesday on the North Shore, including John K. Dunn of Spring Garden's 20-inch flathead and 5 1/2-inch logperch, Curt Collins of Whitehall's 14-inch smallmouth bass, and Ken Migliorese of Washington's Landing's 161/2-inch channel catfish. Upriver, from lock and dam No. 8 to Rosston, muskies moe than 40 inches and large northern pike were reported. The Moraine Trails Council Boy Scouts is sponsoring a fund-raising bass tournament Aug. 8 out of Riverfront Park in Kittaning, with a $5,000 first prize. Youghiogheny River, Monongahela River: Smallmouth bass were hitting on both rivers, along with trout in the tailrace of the Yough. Jay Barry leads Shad Lure's Bait and Tackle July Carp Contest with a 4-pounder from the Mon.
Crooked Creek Dam (Armstrong County): The outflow was yielding tiger muskies up to 30 inches, with bluegills the bait of choice.
Ohio River, Beaver River: An angler caught an 18-inch smallmouth near the Emsworth dam on the Ohio. Legal-size smallmouths and flathead catfish were hitting on the Beaver where a youngster also caught an 18-pound carp. Mike Purcell of the North Shore and his cousin Dan Purcell boated 10 flatheads up to 15 pounds in two outings last weekend.
Brady's Run, Hereford Manor lakes (Beaver County): These stocked trout impoundments were yielding bass in recent days. Channel catfish were hitting at night at Hereford.
Lake Somerset (Somerset County): Walleyes up to 25 inches were biting on worm harnesses in recent days.
Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County): Smallmouth bass were reported, especially around Green Bridge and off Plank Road.
Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County): This 112-acre mountain impoundment was largemouth bass, although anglers have had to deal with lots of weeds.
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): The daytime striped bass bite was slow, but mixed sizes were coming in the early morning, evening and after dark in 1 to 8 feet of water. Lake trout have gone to 50 to 90 feet, where standing timber makes catching difficult. Anglers jigging off stony points in depths without trees were catching 6- to 8-pound lakers.
