Local Cars: Stewart notches first Outlaws win
Friday, July 10, 2009

Fresh from his NASCAR Nextel Cup win Saturday at Daytona, Tony Stewart captured the inaugural Lou Blaney Memorial Classic Tuesday at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio.

Cale Conley of Vienna, W.Va., led for the first 11 laps, after which Stewart took control and held on to win the 30-lap event for the 410 Sprint Cars. It was Stewart's first win in the World of Outlaws-style sprint car, which has a more powerful engine than what the former multitime USAC Champion was accustomed to before making his move to NASCAR.

Stewart is arguably one of the best drivers to have made the transition from USAC competition to NASCAR.

"I've watched him win in so many types of race cars, it just doesn't matter what he drives," said former Would of Outlaws Sprint Car driver and crew chief Jimmy Carr, who works for Tony Stewart Racing as director of competition.

Fellow NASCAR regulars Dave Blaney and Kasey Kahne finished sixth and ninth, respectively, in the event named for the father of Dave and Dale Blaney . Lou Blaney died in January.

Jack Johnson of Duanesburg, NY., dominated the Big Block Modified feature in his first appearance at Sharon Speedway.

"Lou was a great friend and a fine competitor. I raced against him many times and he always ran you clean," Johnson said. "It is my honor to capture the Modified portion of the event being held in tribute to such a fine individual."

Lynch reaches century mark

Sprint car driver Ed Lynch Jr., of Apollo picked up career win 100 (99 Sprint Car wins) July 3 at Lernerville Speedway. The "Apollo Rocket" joins century club members Bob Wearing Sr., Lou Blaney and Lynn Geisler.
