Workers at Hazelwood's Calvary Cemetery were only able to fix five or so of the 89 tombstones that vandals toppled last week. They had to perform other services, including burials and memorials, said Director of Operations Lawrence Domencic, so they had little time and resources to clean up the vandalism.
But local monument company Rome Monument Works came in yesterday morning to fix more than 50 tombstones -- all for free. The Rome workers expect to fix the rest today.
"It's really great to see how rapidly the work that they're getting done and the quality work that they're doing. … I'm highly impressed," said Mr. Domencic, adding other businesses also have called to help.
Rome Monument Works owner John Dioguardi said his company uprights tombstones regularly for no charge. Mr. Domencic said Mr. Dioguardi called him earlier this week to offer assistance.
Mr. Dioguardi said if the work is not completed today, Rome Monuments Works will come next week to finish the job.
