Canonsburg

Council is expected to vote Monday on extending the Teamsters' contract for two years.

The union includes sewer plant, public works and clerical employees. The current contract is set to expire Dec. 31.

If council agrees to extend the contract, the employees will agree to increase their health-care contributions from 1 percent to 1.5 percent of their base pay.

• Outdoor vendors who set up in town during the recent Fourth of July parade have led council and administration to try to determine how much is too much.

Vendors selling food, T-shirts and flowers are frequent sights, but this was the first year an outdoor vendor sold furniture, Manager Terry Hazlett said during a council meeting Monday. The vendors sell from the backs of trucks or set up tents.

The current ordinance allows an outdoor vendor to obtain a 10-day permit for $50. Administrators have to accept any merchant who pays the fee, Mr. Hazlett said.

Solicitor Patrick Derrico said the borough needs a new ordinance addressing this type of merchandising. He may be able to present council with an outline at its next meeting on Monday.

• The Lady Nights, a Canonsburg-based travel softball team, is having tryouts for its 12-under and 14-under fast pitch softball teams from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 29 at Borland Manor Field and again on Aug. 6 at North Strabane Municipal Field.

Washington

State Rep. Jesse White, D-Washington, has introduced a bill that would designate the interchange at Exit 48 of Interstate 79 in Washington County as the Purple Heart Interchange.

The Purple Heart is awarded to U.S. military personnel who are wounded or killed by enemy action. Since the modern version of the medal was instituted in 1932, it is estimated that more than 800,000 have been issued.

"The new National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is located near the Southpointe interchange," Mr. White said. "I believe it is most appropriate that this reminder of their service and sacrifice be prominently marked near the cemetery.

North Strabane
