Good Morning: Braddock meets D.C.
Thursday, July 09, 2009

The telecast is called "Washington Journal," but Tuesday morning, it could have been subtitled "Mr. Fetterman Goes to Washington."

John Fetterman, the colorful, candid mayor of Braddock, appeared live on cable network C-SPAN.

He testified before a Senate committee hearing on the subject "Moving America toward a Clean Energy Economy and Reducing Global Warming Pollution: Legislative Tools."

Mr. Fetterman has made a number of public appearances on behalf of his adopted hometown. He spoke about how a commitment to clean energy can have a significant impact on a longtime industrial town such as Braddock. He pointed out how old steel mills can be refurbished to manufacture wind turbines.

Cows eat free

Which comes first, the chicken or the cow?

If you want a free meal tomorrow, it's the cow.

Chick Fil-A restaurant at the Waterfront, Homestead, will provide breakfast, lunch or dinner -- at no cost -- to anyone who dresses completely as a cow.

Tomorrow will be Cow Appreciation Day at the chicken chain, entitling those who go fully bovine to an entree of their choice, a side item and a beverage.

For those who are a little chicken to dress up completely ... bringing in a cow-spotted item will merit a complimentary entree.

Covered bridge damaged

A small section of wall on Bells Mills Bridge, the last original covered bridge in Westmoreland County, was damaged by fire Monday afternoon.

The red, mostly wooden span crosses Sewickley Creek and connects Sewickley and South Huntingdon, near Route 31. It dates to 1850, according to county Historical Society records, and is recognized nationally as a historic structure.
