Matt Hundenski has visited Ocean City, Md., and Orlando, Fla. this summer, but spent most of his time at those places on a wrestling mat instead of the beach.
"I attended two national wrestling tournaments," said Hundenski, who recently completed his junior year at Hopewell High School. "You have to wrestle the best to be the best, and at these tournaments I faced some of the best wrestlers in the country."
Hundenski spent Memorial Day weekend in Ocean City competing in a dual tournament with a team named Pennsylvania Premium.
"We placed first in our pool, then lost in the playoff round," said Hundenski, a three-year starter for the Vikings. "I had a 5-1 record in the tournament. That gave me a good idea of what to expect at the Disney Duals."
Hundenski wrestled for the Quest School of Wrestling at the Disney Duals, which took place June 22-26 in Orlando, Fla.
"We wrestled 12 matches in four days and placed fourth in the overall standings," Hundenski said. "I had nine wins and three losses [while competing in the 152-pound weight class]. It was a great experience."
Hundenski's trip to Florida actually started a few days early.
"My parents and sister also made the trip," Hundenski said. "We flew down three days early and spent a day with my aunt, who lives in Tampa. I also spent a couple days with [West Allegheny senior] Troy Reaghard and his family."
The trip to Florida gave Hundenski a chance to impress the many college coaches who were in attendance.
"I was trying not to think about the college coaches," Hundenski said. "I just wanted to give 100 percent and hope coaches were impressed. I wasn't familiar with the kids I wrestled but many of them were state place-winners."
Hundenski would like to continue wrestling in college.
"I made an unofficial visit to the University of Maryland after my trip to Ocean City," Hundenski said. "I met with coach Kerry McCoy and got a tour of the campus and the facilities. I really liked it a lot."
Hundenski has been a mainstay in Hopewell's starting lineup since his freshman year. He competed at 140 pounds during the 2006-07 season and placed third in Section 5-AAA. He finished the season with a 25-7 record after losing two in a row at the WPIAL Class AAA tournament.
As a sophomore, Hundenski moved up to 145 pounds and placed first in the section and third in the WPIAL, which earned him a berth in the PIAA championships. Hundenski posted a 1-2 record at Hershey and finished 32-5.
Last season, Hundenski moved up to the 152-pound weight class and claimed section and WPIAL titles. He also finished sixth in the PIAA, en route to a 42-5 record.
"Winning a WPIAL title was a turning point in my career," Hundenski said. "I had been working toward that goal since my freshman year and I kept improving every year. My next goal is to win a PIAA title."
Hundenski was only the fourth Hopewell wrestler to win a WPIAL title. No Viking has won a PIAA title. Tim Ellison came close in 1986 when he placed second in the 132-pound weight class.
Hundenski enters his senior season with a chance to break the school record for career victories. He has a 102-17 record, which is 11 wins short of the school record of 113 set by Chris Jodikinos in 1991.
"Setting the school record for victories would be nice, but my biggest goal is to win a PIAA title," Hundenski said.
Hundenski will put his wrestling career on hold for a few months, while he plays football for the Vikings.
"I've been a defensive starter at cornerback and outside linebacker since my freshman year," Hundenski said. "This year, I'll be starting at cornerback and quarterback. It's a big challenge. I won't be leaving the field very much.
"I'm really looking forward to my senior year, both on the football field and on the wrestling mat."
