A Virginia Beach, Va., man is charged in federal court with traveling to Somerset and South Carolina last year to pick up two underage girls for sex.
Shawn F. Engle, 31, is charged with a variety of counts in the Eastern District of Virginia, including sexual exploitation of a minor, possession of child pornography, witness tampering and enticement.
According to an affidavit, Mr. Engle was arrested in October for traveling to South Carolina to pick up a 13-year-old girl and taking her to his Virginia Beach home a month earlier. During a search of his vehicle in that case, police found a videotape of Mr. Engle having sex with a different young girl, the affidavit said. Through his cell phone records and witness statements, investigators were able to find the girl in Pennsylvania.
She was 16 when the two began chatting online and in text messages last year, the affidavit said. In addition, police said he sent her approximately 50 nude pictures of himself. In an interview, the Pennsylvania girl told investigators that Mr. Engle showed up at her high school on April 16, 2008, and that they drove to Dollar Inn Hotel, in Somerset, where they engaged in sexual activity.
Mr. Engle returned again, on April 25, she said, and took her to a Super 8 Motel in Somerset, where they had sex.
It is likely that Mr. Engle, who is in custody, will only face charges in Virginia and not have any filed against him in Pennsylvania.
