Pittsburgh zoo hosting two Philly pachyderms
Bette, Kallie join bull elephant Jackson
Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Jackson, the Pittsburgh zoo's prolific bull elephant, is hosting two cow elephants from the Philadelphia Zoo.

The two African elephants, 26-year-old Bette and 27-year-old Kallie, will stay with Jackson at the Pittsburgh Zoo's 724-acre International Conservation Center in Fairhope, Somerset County. The animals arrived from Philadelphia last night after a four-hour, non-stop drive by 18-wheel tractor trailer.

After "the girls" get settled into their surroundings, handlers will evaluate whether they are able to breed and then decide whether to breed them with Jackson. Meanwhile, "they are welcome to stay as long as they like," according to Pittsburgh zoo spokeswoman Tracy Gray.

Philadelphia elephant keeper Jen Robinson, one of the zoo staff members who accompanied the elephants on their move, will be staying at the conservation center for several days to help Bette and Kallie adjust to their new home.

Bette and Kallie will be housed in a 10,000-square-foot building that can accommodate at least four animals. The elephant building includes three indoor stalls and an indoor arena with sand flooring and heated pads. It also has two outdoor yards for the elephants to graze.

Future plans include a one-acre indoor facility that includes housing elephants of various ages, as well as a large indoor arena for exercise in winter months.

This story updates a previous version that incorrectly reported the Philadelphia Zoo is renovating its elephant display.
