Fishing Report: 07/03/2009

Lake Erie: Big numbers of perch were reported yesterday, with limits coming quickly in 35 to 45 feet from the point of the peninsula to the lighthouse, and east and west of Walnut Creek. Good walleye fishing was reported in 25 to 35 feet from Walnut west to the Ohio line. Walleyes were suspended 20 to 30 feet down in 50 to 60 feet of water from east of the lighthouse to the point of the peninsula, Robert Sharkey, 11, of Erie boated a 10-pound 10-ounce, 31-inch walleye on Chasin Steel charters.

Allegheny River (Venango County): Brandon Hunsberger of Oil City won the adult catfish division in last weekend's Mr. Whiskers Carp and Catfish Contest out of Oil City with a 291???2-inch channel catfish. Steven R. Hayes of Breaksville, Ohio, took second with a 29-inch flathead. Joel Laird, 16, of Cochranton won the youth division with a 251???2-inch flathead. Brandon Martin won the adult carp division with a carp a little more than 32 inches.

Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Bass and bluegills were hitting along with bowfins and northern pike in recent days.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Brian Zyskowski of Pittsburgh caught several bass, 12 to 18 inches, in the weeds near Launch 2 June 20. One angler landed crappies nearly 18 inches under the main causeway in recent weeks. A few walleyes also were reported.

Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): John Swesey and Mike Mostoller won Sunday's Keystone Bass Buddy Circuit tournament with a 5-fish total of 141???2 pounds. Swezey also caught the 51???4-pound largemouth lunker. Just two 6-fish limits were caught and total weights were just 121???8 pounds and 101???2 pounds.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Eleanor Puchta of Reserve won Saturday's Moraine Musky Association tournament releasing a 30-inch muskie with 13-inch girth caught on a Minteer Pikie lure. It was the only muskie boated, although competitors reeled in bass up to 18 inches and catfish up to 20 inches.

Hereford Manor Lake (Beaver County): Jim Hough of Zelienople caught a 23-inch golden rainbow trout June 30. Brian Hanek caught a 2-foot, 4-inch golden rainbow June 16.

Allegheny River: The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers released 20 fish Wednesday from the North Shore, including Russell Lang of Baldwin's 17-inch freshwater drum, Bryan Byers of Grandview's 191???2-inch smallmouth buffalo, Chet Stoffman of Squirrel Hill's 81???2-inch rock bass, and Tommy Lippert of Spring Garden's 27-inch carp.

Monongahela River: Smallmouth bass were hitting in recent days. The Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta Bass Team Tournament is Sunday out of Riverfront Park on the South Side. To register, arrive at the park between 4:30 and 5 a.m.

Ohio River: Michael Jonnet, 20, of Moon caught a 6-pound, 221???2-inch sheephead with 16-inch girth on a crawler last week. Stephen Manukas landed a 28-inch, 6-pound 14-ounce walleye targeting catfish with a live bluegill. Boaters should avoid trying to lock through Dashields and Emsworth dams July 6-24, as U.S. Army Corps of Engineer maintenance work could cause delays of up to 10 hours.

Youghiogheny River: The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocked the tailrace with trout yesterday.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): Smallmouth bass up to 18 inches and crappies up to 15 inches were reported in recent days. Crappies were hitting in brush piles and under the docks.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Small northern pike and average-size perch, bluegills, and crappies were reported.

Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County): A 5-pound bass was released in recent days. Northern pike also were hitting.

Lake Somerset (Somerset County): Bass, crappies and channel catfish were hitting.

Twin Lakes (Westmoreland County): Anglers reported good bluegill catches in recent days.

Keystone Dam (Armstrong County): One angler limited out on walleyes up to 22 inches and another angler caught two walleyes, 24 and 26 inches. Numbers of mostly small crappies and a couple of small muskies also were reported.

Glendale, Wilmore, Ebensburg reservoirs (Cambria County): Both were yielding bass. Ebensburg also was producing nice-size bluegills.

Pine Creek, Little Pine Creek, Slate Run, Cedar Run, Kettle Creek, Young Woman's Creek (North Central Pennsylvania): As of yesterday, some of the best conditions in years prevailed. Hatches included blue-winged olives in the morning, slate drakes and blue quills through the day, and little orange sulphurs and cahills in the evenings. Terrestrials were also fishing well.
