Top football recruit may miss season
Monday, July 06, 2009

Sto-Rox senior Paul Jones, considered one of the top high school quarterbacks in the state, may miss the upcoming football season after sustaining a broken left ankle during a pickup basketball game last Thursday.

Jones, a Penn State recuit, was scheduled to have surgery today at Childrens Hospital.

"Depending on how things go, the worst-case scenario is he will be out four to six months," said Jones' father, also named Paul. "The best-case scenario is that he can get out and start moving around maybe three, four games into the season."

Some scouting services rank him among the top 10 quarterbacks in the country.

Jones was the second-leading passer in the WPIAL last season behind Seneca Valley's C.J.Brown, who will be playing at Maryland this year. Jones completed 107 of 167 passes for 1,790 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Jones' Sto-Rox teammate, wide receiver Andrew Carswell, just committed to Pitt last week.

"People have said, 'Why was he playing basketball?' " said Jones' father. "Because he's 17 years old and he is an athlete. You can't have kids live in a bubble."
