Five members of an Amish family were injured in Clarion, and the horse drawing their buggy was killed by a suspected drunken driver last night, state police said.
Mark W. Burkholder, 42, and his wife, Ruth, 41, had been riding in the carriage at 10:10 p.m. with their children when an SUV crashed into their buggy on Route 208 in the Knox section of Beaver Township.
The SUV, driven by Brandon Lee Breghenti, 20, of Knox, had been traveling behind the Amish carriage, which was struck as it turned into a driveway.
The SUV, a Chevy Blazer, struck the carriage from the rear, causing the Burkholders and their children, ages 2, 3, and 4, to be ejected.
Police said Mr. Breghenti stopped at the scene and briefly stepped out of his truck before he got back in and drove away.
Mr. Breghenti was later arrested and arraigned before District Judge Duane Quinn in Clarion on charges of drunken driving and related counts, police said.
He was being held in the Clarion County Jail on $75,000 bail.
Mrs. Burkholder and her 2-year-old child suffered serious injuries, police said.
The other members of the family also were treated at Clarion Hospital for their injuries, which were minor, police said.
Mr. Breghenti was not injured.
