Puppies stolen from Fayette County shelter
Police collected DNA evidence at scene

Two 9-week-old puppies were stolen from the Fayette County Humane Society over the weekend.

The dogs -- both female and from the same litter -- are black and white boxer/pit bull mixes, said shelter manager Theresa Linden.

The break-in occurred between 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. yesterday.

When state police from Uniontown arrived to investigate, they were able to collect blood and DNA evidence, which could be used to help catch the suspect.

According to state police, the person broke a basement window, then punched out the glass to a front counter window before breaking through another glass door to get to where the animals are kept.

"There was blood on the window, on the floor, on the steps, and out in the parking lot," Ms. Linden said.

She's not sure if the puppies were the intended targets of the break-in.

"We have a 200-pound Great Dane in the back that might have spooked them," Ms. Linden said.

Duke, who belongs to one of the humane officers, was staying in the shelter, and the suspect would have had to get past him if they wanted to get to the rest of the animals, she said.

In addition to the puppies, the suspect also stole three bags of dog food. Ms. Linden estimated that there was about $500 in damage done to the building.

She doesn't know why the puppies would have been stolen.

"Maybe they're selling them. It could be drug-related. Or maybe they're going to breed them," she said.

At 9 weeks old, the dogs had not yet been spayed.

"I want them back, and I want them back safe," Ms. Linden said.
