Destinta Theatres in Bridgeville, North Versailles to get digital 3-D
Film notes
Friday, July 03, 2009

Pittsburghers who want to see "G-Force" in digital 3-D will have two new options later this month.

Destinta Theatres are converting auditoriums in Bridgeville and North Versailles, as well as New York and Connecticut, to accommodate the latest technology.

"The rollout of digital 3-D gives Destinta the opportunity to utilize the latest technology to provide our patrons a superior viewing experience," Tom Rizzo, chief executive officer of Destinta Theatres, said in announcing the news.

The venues also will present alternative entertainment, such as concerts, operas and sporting events, as many other theaters do now, thanks to high-tech transmission.

The Bridgeville location, with 20 screens, is off Route 50 at the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center, while the Destinta Plaza East 22-plex can be found at 1701 Lincoln Highway, North Versailles.

In addition to July 24's "G-Force," other 3-D movies this year will include "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Toy Story" (getting a digital 3-D makeover)," "A Christmas Carol" and "Avatar."

Go to http://www.destinta.com for more information about the theaters or a VIP Movie Club that allows customers to accumulate points for free drinks, popcorn or movies.

Oscar, class of 2009

The average age of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just got a lot younger, thanks to invites to Michael Cera, Emile Hirsch and Seth Rogen.

The Academy is asking 134 artists and executives to join the organization. In addition to Cera, Hirsch and Rogen, the actors are: Casey Affleck, Emily Blunt, Viola Davis, James Franco, Brendan Gleeson, Anne Hathaway, Taraji P. Henson, Hugh Jackman, Melissa Leo, and Jane Lynch.

Along with Eddie Marsan, James McAvoy, Paul Rudd, Amy Ryan, Michael Shannon, Michelle Williams and Jeffrey Wright.

The balance come from virtually every field in the business, from directors (Oscar winner Danny Boyle and hit maker Tyler Perry) and writers to casting directors, cinematographers, costume designers, makeup artists and hairstylists.

New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in Beverly Hills in September. Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 since 2003.

Channing joins 'Plaid'

Carol Channing will perform "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend," during a "Forever Plaid 20th Anniversary Special Event" being beamed into movie theaters, including two here, Thursday at 8 p.m.

The one-night event will feature the original cast live from the red carpet in Los Angeles, a taped performance of "Forever Plaid," a live performance of numbers never before staged during the play's off-Broadway run and a sing-along.

Created by writer-director Stuart Ross, "Forever Plaid" is a musical revue about a fictitious 1950s close harmony group killed on the way to their big break.

Participating theaters include the Cinemark at Pittsburgh Mills and Showcase Cinemas West in Robinson. For tickets and more information, go to www.FathomEvents.com and click on "Upcoming Events."
