Thursday, July 02, 2009

The Pitt men's basketball team will face Big 10 Conference power Indiana in the 15th annual Jimmy V Classic Dec. 8 at Madison Square Garden in New York. It will be the second game of a doubleheader on ESPN.

Big East rival Georgetown plays Butler at 7 p.m. in the first game.

Pitt will participate in its second Jimmy V Classic. The Panthers previously participated in the event five years ago when it defeated Memphis, 70-51, Dec. 7, 2004.

Pitt also is scheduled to participate in the O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo., from Nov. 23-24. The four-team event features Pitt, Texas, Wichita State and Iowa.

More college basketball

Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin is confident that New York prep star Lance Stephenson will emerge from his misdemeanor sexual abuse trial unscathed later this month. Stephenson signed with Cincinnati, one of the schools still interested in him after his latest off-court problems. It's unclear whether he will be eligible to play next season. There are questions about his eligibility after he participated in a documentary during his junior year at high school.

• Former IUP assistant coach Andrew Sachs was named men's coach at Bethany. Sachs recently was an assistant at Holy Cross under former Pitt coach Ralph Willard.
